Daily Maintenance and Testing of UPS (Part 1)

1.The Importance of Maintenance Work

Daily maintenance work mainly involves detecting potential faults and quickly adjusting and eliminating them from small changes in UPS parameters. The quality of user use is mainly determined by the specific environmental quality, power supply quality, and the quality of maintenance personnel. From practical experience, it is known that maintenance free batteries are the weakest link in UPS power supply systems, in addition to UPS host maintenance. According to statistics, 40% of UPS system failures are caused by batteries, and some are fatal. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the scientific management of maintenance free batteries.

The method of battery management is to detect and control the operating status of the battery, and promptly deal with batteries with insufficient capacity or problems. Scientific monitoring and management of the battery should be carried out. The purpose of management is to determine the condition and capacity of the battery before a fault (such as a power outage) occurs, in order to ensure that the battery can serve as a backup power supply in the event of a power outage.

Maintenance personnel can grasp various parameters of UPS operation from UPS instruments or local monitoring equipment on site, and can also remotely monitor the operation of UPS and batteries through the maintenance service center. Remote monitoring is more conducive to professional personnel in the maintenance service center to make accurate and rapid judgments and take corresponding measures.

2. Intelligent maintenance work

In order to know whether the UPS system is running normally, it is necessary to know many parameters of the UPS system, such as input voltage, output voltage, current, frequency, power device temperature, apparent power, active power, power factor, load rate, battery discharge current, battery charging current, battery capacity, powerable backup time, fault record (location, time), fault waveform and other information. Therefore, it is necessary for UPS to have rich monitoring software and multi-functional interface, which can monitor the operation reports and print records of the UPS system daily and monthly, so as to facilitate local monitoring and remote monitoring.

3. Importance of maintenance services

For UPS power supply system, only high-quality maintenance service can ensure the reliability of long-term operation of UPS system. Users are not only concerned about the reliability of the UPS system, but also about the availability of the UPS system, that is, the system can be repaired as quickly as possible after failure to ensure the reliability of the UPS system. Availability greater than or equal to 99.99% is required.

For example, only the MTBF (excluding bypass switch) of the inverter of Mitsubishi UPS in Japan is 45000h, and the MT-TR of Mitsubishi UPS is 4h, which can ensure that the availability of this UPS system is greater than or equal to 99.991%.
