How many devices can a 42U server rack hold?
What does 1U mean in the context of server and switch equipment? How many servers can a 42U rack hold?
1. How much is 1U in a server?
When buying server racks, manufacturers will always ask you: How many units of rack space do you want? Or how many units of equipment do you want to house?
1. So what does this U mean?
“U” (Unit) is the standard unit of height for servers and rack equipment, used to measure the physical height of the equipment within a rack.
2. Definitions and Standards
U is a standard unit established by the Electronic Industries Association ( EIA ) to regulate the external dimensions of servers and other data center equipment. 1U equals 1.75 inches (approximately 4.45 centimeters), 2U is twice the size of 1U, or 8.9 centimeters, and so on.
Server size specifications:
1U = 4.45cm high
2U = 8.9cm high
3U = Height 4.45cm * 3
4U = Height 4.45cm * 4
3. So what is a 1U server ?
A 1U server is a high-availability, high-density, low-cost server platform. U stands for the height of the server chassis. 1U equals 4.45 centimeters, so 2U would be 2 x 4.5 centimeters.
4. Why use U, and what is its purpose?
The primary function of the U (mounted unit) is to ensure that servers can be installed in racks at a uniform size. Racks typically have screw holes for mounting servers, allowing them to align and securely fasten. This standardized design makes server placement in the data center more efficient and facilitates management and maintenance.
2. How many servers can a 4U server rack hold?
The most commonly used server rack is the 42U rack.
So here’s the question!
How many servers can be placed in a 42U rack?
A server rack can only hold a limited number of servers. A 42U high rack does not mean that it can actually hold 42 1U servers. This is because you need to leave space for heat dissipation and movement, you need to consider power supply, overall heat dissipation, and there must be space for cable routing at the top and bottom, as well as space for other equipment such as switches, firewalls, and monitors.
Therefore, generally speaking, a maximum of about 20 1U servers can be placed in the rack. Why 20? Because space needs to be left between the 1U servers for heat dissipation. In other words, if you want to put one 1U switch or server in the rack, you need 2U of space.
A 2U server can typically accommodate around 10 units, plus the need to place switches, routers, and other equipment.
