7. Charger malfunction

When the charger or generator on the engine fails, its current or voltage may fluctuate wildly, which can easily cause violent reactions in the battery, producing a large amount of gas and leading to battery bulging.

How to prevent battery bulging

â‘  Control the voltage and current. As mentioned above, excessive voltage or current can easily cause the battery to bulge, so it is important to control the voltage and current.

â‘¡Try to control the charging time and avoid overcharging.

â‘¢ Choose a good charger. If a problem is found, repair or replace it in time to avoid causing the battery to bulge.

â‘£ During the charging process, ensure that all connection points are secure, as loose connections can generate sparks, which could lead to battery bulging.

⑤ Ensure the vent is kept clear. During routine maintenance, promptly clean any debris around the battery.

â‘¥ Check the battery casing for cracks and electrolyte leaks beforehand. Leaking electrolyte can seep into cables or circuits, causing short circuits and sparks.

⑦ Promptly eliminate internal short circuits and electrode plate sulfation in the battery. An internal short circuit in the battery can generate sparks, which can ignite the hydrogen-oxygen mixture, while electrode plate sulfation will cause a large amount of gas to be generated inside the battery. Therefore, it is important to regularly check the battery for internal short circuits and sulfation.

â‘§ It is forbidden to use metal objects such as cables to spark at the positive and negative terminals of the battery, as this can easily cause the hydrogen and oxygen gases in the air to explode, and in severe cases, it may even endanger personal safety.

⑨ When repairing electrical equipment, the flammable gases inside the battery should be discharged first, because sparks may be generated or the battery may have a large current during the repair process, which is a major safety hazard.

â‘© Regularly check the amount and density of the electrolyte. This will greatly protect the battery and prevent it from bulging.

Three causes of battery explosions

1. Excessive internal pressure in the battery can cause the battery casing to explode.

2. Battery explosion caused by hydrogen gas coming into contact with an open flame.

3. Due to the blockage of the battery vent, the battery bursts first. The burst causes the battery to vibrate, and the loose terminal connection generates sparks, which in turn leads to an explosion.

Methods to prevent battery explosions

1. Control the charging amount and avoid overcharging to reduce gas release. Open flames are strictly prohibited in the charging room; ensure proper ventilation. During charging, ensure connections are secure to prevent sparks from occurring due to looseness.

2. Low-voltage constant-voltage charging is used during use, resulting in less gas evolution.

3. Prevent battery casing cracks and electrolyte leakage.

4. Keep the battery cover dry and clean.

5. Regularly check the vent hole of the battery plug and keep it unobstructed.

6. Control the electrolyte level in the battery to ensure it is within the specified range and that the electrolyte does not overflow.

7. The battery terminal connection wires should have low contact resistance and high contact pressure, and the connection points should be coated with petroleum jelly to isolate them from the external environment and prevent sparks from entering the battery and igniting flammable gases.

In normal use of batteries, as long as the batteries are checked frequently and problems are identified and resolved in a timely manner, the phenomenon of battery bulging is not so likely to occur.
