APC UPS

Differences between Firefighting EPS and Uninterruptible Power Supply UPS (Part 2)

EPS classification: Input methods can be divided into single-phase 220V and three-phase 380V;

According to the output mode, it can be divided into single-phase, three-phase, and mixed single-phase and three-phase outputs;

There are three installation forms: floor standing, wall mounted, and embedded wall mounted: with capacities ranging from 0.5kW to 800kW at various levels;

According to the service target, it can be divided into two types: power load and emergency lighting; The backup time is generally 90-120 minutes, and if there are special requirements, the backup time can be configured according to the design requirements.

There are several main differences between UPS and EPS:

1. Different safety regulations

UPS uninterruptible power supply is mainly used to protect user equipment or business from economic losses, and its product technology certification mainly includes Theil certification, CQC certification, etc. The development of EPS power supply originated from the sudden failure of the power grid. In order to ensure the needs of power guarantee and fire linkage, it can provide instant escape lighting and fire emergency, protect users’ lives or bodies from harm, and its product technical requirements are subject to the supervision of the Ministry of Public Security’s fire certification and the acceptance of the installation site’s fire safety inspection. The two have significantly different safety regulations and therefore have different values.

2. Different performance priorities

Both UPS power supply and EPS power supply can provide two options for output power supply. In order to ensure high-quality power supply, UPS power supply prioritizes inverter for online UPS, while EPS power supply prioritizes mains power for safety and energy-saving considerations in daily use. Of course, there are differences in the design specifications of rectifiers/chargers and inverters between the two.

3. Different usage methods

Due to its online use, APC UPS power supply can promptly sound an alarm in the event of a malfunction, and is backed up by mains power. Users can promptly identify and troubleshoot faults, without causing greater losses to accidents. EPS power supply is used offline and is the last power supply guarantee, so its reliability design requirements are higher. It cannot be simply understood as a backup UPS, otherwise the importance of EPS power supply will be cancelled. If EPS cannot provide emergency power through batteries in case of mains power failure, EPS will be virtually non-existent and the consequences will be unimaginable.

4. Different power supply objects

The power supply object of UPS power supply is computer and network equipment, and the load nature (input power factor) is not significantly different, so the national standard stipulates that the output power of UPS power supply is 0.8. The power supply objects of EPS are power guarantee and fire safety, and the load properties are both inductive, capacitive, and rectifier nonlinear loads. Therefore, its output power factor cannot be set to 0.8 (the EPS national standard will specify its value), and some loads are only put into operation after the power supply is cut off. Therefore, EPS is required to provide a large impact current. EPS power supply needs to have good output dynamic characteristics and stronger overload resistance. The allocation of technical design indicators for the components of EPS power, power source, and UPS power supply is different.

In summary, when selecting UPS and EPS, it is necessary to distinguish the nature, occasion, and purpose of use, and make a reasonable choice. Never assume that EPSEKUPS or UPSHKEPS are good, as they have their own purposes and design concepts. Through long-term design and production of DC power supply and UPS The application, understanding, and comprehension of EPS, combined with practical experience in EPS design, manufacturing, and application, have been briefly discussed in terms of the principles, performance characteristics, and applicable fields of UPS and EPS. It is hoped that this will be helpful for everyone to better understand and apply UPS and EPS.
