APC UPS, Battery

Suggestions for extending APC UPS battery life (Part 1)

The predicted lifespan of valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries in APC UPS under recommended conditions is 3 to 5 years; However, this expected lifespan may fluctuate significantly due to the following factors. Proactively understanding these characteristics and conditions will ensure that you maximize the expected lifespan of your battery and prepare for any impending power failures.

Battery placement

When installing APC UPS, users should determine the installation location of the device to provide the best power protection for IT equipment in the room. It is recommended to install APC UPS in a temperature controlled environment similar to the expected application. APC UPS should not be placed near open windows or areas with high levels of moisture; The environment should be free from excessive dust and corrosive smoke. Do not operate APC UPS when the temperature and humidity exceed the specified range. The ventilation openings on the front, side, or back of the device must not be blocked.

maintenance

Most single-phase UPS batteries are classified as “maintenance-free,” which makes many users feel unnecessary to monitor and maintain their UPS batteries, but this is not the case. Maintenance-free batteries simply mean that these batteries do not require any replacement fluid, so it is crucial to understand how to properly care for and monitor your batteries.

Ambient temperature

All batteries have a rated capacity, which is determined according to the specified conditions. The rated capacity of APC UPS batteries is based on an ambient temperature of 25 °C. Operating the UPS under these conditions will maximize the life of the APC UPS and achieve optimal performance.

Although APC UPS will continue to operate at different temperatures, it is important to note that this may result in reduced battery performance and lifespan. The general rule to remember is that the ambient temperature is based on 25 ℃, and for every 8.3 ℃ increase, the battery life will be reduced by 50%. Therefore, keeping APC UPS at a comfortable temperature is crucial for maximizing the lifespan and functionality of UPS batteries.
