Research on Data Center Rack Power Systems ( Part 1)

1. Data Center Power Supply Chain

Data center power supply system refers to the components after the mains transformer and generator set, including ATS automatic transfer switch, power distribution system, UPS, power cable cabinet power supply , etc.

2. Power supply characteristics of T terminal equipment

(1) The characteristics of IT equipment power supplies directly determine almost all the major characteristics of rack power supplies and router components, including: shape, electrical capacity, voltage, frequency, current rating, insulation rating, surge protection rating, monitoring method, etc. For example, in a certain site in China, for a PC server with a nameplate power of 250W, considering its power requirements, the front socket configuration can be selected according to the IEC320 C13 10A250V specification .

( 2) The reliability requirements of IT equipment power supplies directly determine the networking method of rack power supplies and router components. IT equipment widely uses two or more power supplies to provide power simultaneously. This multi-power supply technology is known in the industry as “redundant power supply”. In essence, most IT equipment redundant power supply systems can be classified as dual power supply systems. The design of redundant power supply (dual power supply system) provides an excellent material basis for improving the reliability of the server’s power supply. Common sense tells us that if each power supply of a dual power supply server can find an independent energy source through an independent power supply route, the highest reliability can be achieved.

Therefore, the 2N/2(N+1) power supply structure is a power supply solution that arose based on the redundant power supply structure of servers. In fact, TIA-942 classifies the 2N/2(N+1) power supply structure as Tir 4 (the highest reliability power supply class). This 2N power supply structure requires not only electrical redundancy after the mains transformer and generator set, including ATS automatic transfer switches, power distribution systems, UPS, power cables, and rack power supply, but also physical redundancy. Therefore, a well-designed data center rack power supply and distribution system is shown in Figure 4, where two power supply buses provide redundant power to IT equipment through two independent power supply routes.
