APC UPS, Data Center

The 800V power supply architecture for data centers is all the rage, but will UPS systems become obsolete? ( Part 2)

III. Imagining a Power Supply Architecture Based on Computing and Power Collaboration

Maidechuang believes that another layer of the 800V DC power supply is its mission of “computing and power synergy.” It promotes the integration of renewable energy and energy storage. Photovoltaic power generation and battery energy storage are both DC outputs, and the 800V DC bus can be seamlessly connected, reducing the inverter stage and improving the utilization rate of new energy sources.

Because 800V DC is an open power supply architecture, it can accommodate grid, wind power, and photovoltaic power connections. In the future, a computing-power collaborative development model can be formed throughout the park, helping high-energy-consuming data centers meet the security and reliability requirements of server operations. By combining various products such as wind, solar, and energy storage , and peak shaving and valley filling, its form can be made more flexible and comprehensive.

Of course, the more practical challenge comes from the business model. Computing-power collaboration requires navigating multiple stakeholders, including data centers, power grids, energy storage, and new energy sources, and 800V DC is just one of the technological carriers involved. Without the support of institutional and market mechanisms, technological imagination can easily remain only at the white paper stage.

Therefore, 800V DC may be a “necessary condition” for computer-electrical synergy, but it is by no means a “sufficient condition.” When the industry places too much expectation on a single voltage level, it may actually delay the real solution to systemic problems.

Conclusion

Returning to the realities of the industry, 800V DC will not replace all power supply methods in the short term. As many guests have repeatedly emphasized, AC UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current), medium-voltage direct-supply integrated power supply architecture (Panama Power), and solid-state transformer (SST) architecture will coexist for a considerable period of time.
