Three types of UPS and their output waveforms ( Part 3 )
To summarize, how should you choose?
Close your eyes and think about whether the equipment you are trying to protect contains any of the following three types of items:
If there are motors, compressors, water pumps, fans, and laser printers—only consider online pure sine waves.
If there are power amplifiers, medical equipment, or precision measuring instruments —only online pure sine waves should be considered.
If you only have a regular computer, router, monitor, and network switch, a backup square wave switch is sufficient and you don’t need to spend extra money.
If it falls somewhere in between, such as a few tower servers plus a switch, then an online interactive analog sine wave is a more balanced choice.
One more thing: some brands on the market, like Schneider Electric , clearly distinguish between standby, line-interactive, and online UPS systems, covering a complete range from a few hundred watts for residential use to several hundred kilowatts for data centers. When selecting a model, directly tell them your load type and expected backup time, and professional manufacturers will provide matching waveforms and battery configurations. However, you must be clear about your own needs—never use a square wave UPS to power an air conditioner; that’s setting yourself up for disaster.
Finally, here’s a piece of advice: If you choose the right UPS, you won’t even notice its presence in normal times; if you choose the wrong one, it might not only fail to help you in a critical moment, but could even harm you.
