A Comprehensive Guide to UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply ( Part 5)
1.3 Core Operating Modes and Logic of UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply
The UPS uninterruptible power supply operates with fully automated intelligent control, requiring no manual intervention. Based on the mains power status, it operates in four core modes: normal mains power mode, emergency mains power mode, bypass maintenance mode, and battery charging mode. These four modes automatically and seamlessly switch, ensuring continuous and stable power supply throughout the entire process. The specific operating logic is as follows:
First, the normal mains power supply mode: When the voltage, frequency, and waveform of the municipal power grid are within the standard range, the mains power input to the UPS equipment is rectified, filtered, and regulated before being converted by the inverter into high-precision standard AC power to continuously power the downstream load equipment. Simultaneously, the rectified DC power continuously float-charges the battery pack, replenishing battery losses and keeping the battery pack fully charged and ready to respond to sudden mains power failures. In this mode, the core function of the UPS power supply is to purify power, stabilize voltage and frequency, optimize power quality, and avoid damage to precision equipment caused by poor mains power quality.
Second, the emergency power supply mode for mains power failures: When the mains power experiences various abnormalities such as power outages, excessively high or low voltage, frequency deviations, or excessive harmonics, failing to meet power supply standards, the UPS main control system will detect the mains power anomaly within milliseconds, immediately disconnect the mains power input circuit, and initiate the battery discharge mode. The DC power output from the battery pack is converted to standard AC power by the inverter, continuously supplying power to the downstream load equipment. There is no power interruption or equipment shutdown throughout the process, providing ample time for staff to handle faults, shut down equipment, and start the backup generator, completely eliminating various losses caused by sudden power failures. Once the mains power returns to normal, the equipment automatically switches back to the mains voltage stabilization mode and simultaneously restarts the battery charging process, operating entirely automatically.
Third, bypass safety operation and maintenance mode: When the UPS equipment requires regular maintenance, module replacement, fault diagnosis, or when the equipment experiences temporary overload or internal module failure, the system automatically triggers the static bypass switch, directly supplying power to the back-end load from the mains power, and the internal equipment of the UPS enters a shutdown and maintenance state. This mode ensures the uninterrupted operation of the back-end core equipment while achieving safe operation and maintenance of the UPS equipment, effectively solving the pain point of traditional power supply equipment operation and maintenance requiring shutdown, and is suitable for core scenarios of 24/7 uninterrupted operation.
