APC PDU

How to choose a rack mounted PDU power distribution unit (Part 3)

Rack mounted PDUs can also have control functions in addition to providing monitoring means. By using the switch function, the remote control on/off cycle operation of the socket can be completed through the network. This feature is quite common in remote on-site settings. Servers or switches may require manual restarts by chance, and sometimes these devices are located in office environments or places without on-site IT operators. The common solution is to call local processing personnel to assist with the handling. The processing personnel entered the unfamiliar network cabinet, fumbled to admit the faulty device, and then restarted it. Even with great caution, the phenomenon of mistakenly restarting devices is inevitable. With the switch type rack mounted PDU, professional Jiang staff can easily control the on/off operation of the equipment even when not on site. It is necessary to ensure that the rated value of the rack mounted power distribution unit can continue to operate normally in an operating environment up to 45 ℃ (113 °). Select a metering rack mounted distribution unit with an accuracy within ± 5%, which is sufficient for monitoring the circuit and avoiding circuit breaker overload.

5. In terms of appearance and equipment selection methods, each type of equipment is equipped with redundant power supplies to provide backup power in case of other power supply failures. For data center applications, these power supplies are generally connected to independent redundant rack mounted PDUs, which are powered by independent power sources or circuits. This can avoid the phenomenon of all loads losing power when a hand disease occurs in a certain section of the power chain.

The APC rack mounted PDU equipment is located on the opposite side of the server rack, providing sockets for easy access of IT equipment or operation by equipment personnel. The two primary equipment methods are as follows:

(1) The horizontal 482.6mm (19 inch) rack mounted PDU is primarily used in conjunction with open structure racks and is equipped with audio/video devices.

(2) Vertical OUPDU makes the distribution socket closer to the powered equipment. The products of this device method are the preferred choice for data centers because they do not occupy rack space, require shorter power cords, and facilitate cable routing. This device method ensures that each power line is wired in an orderly manner.

Suggestion: In the data center application environment, it is recommended to choose vertical device style 0U standard products as much as possible, which can effectively utilize space and reduce cable wiring clutter.

Overall, before selecting a rack mounted PDU, it is necessary to first understand the type of equipment required. These I devices will determine the type and quantity of sockets, as well as power consumption requirements. Based on the budgeted power requirements and on-site voltage related information, suitable standard cables and input power lines can be recognized.

In addition, it is necessary to consider how to avoid circuit overload and high-temperature operation conditions. The metering rack PDU can announce alarm information to IT personnel before the circuit experiences overload, thereby reducing the risk of shutdown. Compared to simply reading instantaneous readings, this type of product can provide historical power consumption data for operators and assist IT personnel in making the best decision plan.

In most cases, one to two standardized rack mounted power distribution units are sufficient to meet the needs of almost all racks in data centers. Common rack mounted   APCPDU parameters include:

1. (36) C-13 and (6) C-19 sockets

2.20-30A (ANSI)/16-32A (IEC) input power line

3. Cable and power plug at least 2 meters (6 feet) long

4. Measurement branches with an accuracy within ± 5%

5.0U appearance.
