APC UPS

Common types of human induced faults in the operation and maintenance of UPS power supply systems in data centers (Part 2)

2.Malfunctions caused by improper usage environment

Machines are not placed according to the environmental requirements stated in the manual, and some even place UPS in randomly passing corridors or dripping basements. For example, several 200kVA UPS units are placed on a flat roof with only one layer of prefabricated panels, and the air conditioning is only two 5P comfortable air conditioning units. Another example is a glass factory that placed UPS units in a powder flying factory building, and so on. Resulting in frequent malfunctions.

3.Malfunctions caused by inadequate systems

For example, some on duty personnel randomly connect electric stoves, rice cookers, and vacuum cleaners to UPS, causing overload tripping; Some duty personnel’s food attracted mice to enter the machine, causing a fire……

4 Handover faults

This type of malfunction is mainly caused by the lack of coordination or coordination among management personnel. For example, in the ticketing system of a certain railway station, the front check-in personnel disconnected the external battery pack of the UPS due to moving the machine position, but did not explain it to the later party afterwards, resulting in a failure of both the mains power and UPS power supply……

5 Experience Faults

Experience is indispensable and a valuable asset. But experience has its relativity, that is, the experience gained on a certain UPS may not be completely suitable for another UPS, otherwise it will lead to failures. A telecommunications bureau used the same method to start another brand of machine without reading the manual, resulting in the inverter burning out.

6 oversight faults

Some devices may experience aging or early failure during operation, which can lead to malfunctions if not detected in a timely manner. These cannot be detected in automatic monitoring. For example, fuses that begin to bend due to aging, loose screws in battery structures, and fine cracks in the battery case after prolonged discharge can all cause malfunctions if not detected or dealt with in a timely manner.

7 Malfunctions caused by hasty deployment

When it comes to maintenance and repair, one should not be impatient at all. One should consider everything thoroughly before starting. An engineer from a certain company needs to perform maintenance on a UPS that is currently running for a user. According to regulations, the maintenance bypass switch should be used to shut down the UPS before maintenance. However, according to the procedure, the automatic bypass should be activated first, and then the switch blade of the maintenance bypass should be closed. Perhaps there were other urgent matters to attend to in the project, and after entering the computer room, the maintenance bypass switch was closed without consideration, resulting in an explosion of the inverter power tube.
